{"id":7688,"date":"2022-10-11T20:34:39","date_gmt":"2022-10-11T20:34:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/putridparrot.com\/blog\/?p=7688"},"modified":"2022-10-11T20:34:39","modified_gmt":"2022-10-11T20:34:39","slug":"file-explorer-extended-search-in-windows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/putridparrot.com\/blog\/file-explorer-extended-search-in-windows\/","title":{"rendered":"File explorer extended search in Windows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>File Explorer has (as we all know) a search box in the top right, ofcourse we can enter some text and File Explorer will search for filenames with that text and text within files, but there are more options to tailor our search.<\/p>\n<p>See <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/win32\/lwef\/-search-2x-wds-aqsreference#common-file-kinds\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Common File Kinds<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s look at some examples<\/p>\n<p><strong>File name search<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If we prefix our search term with <em>file:<\/em> like this<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: plain; title: ; notranslate\" title=\"\">\r\nfile: MyFile\r\nfile:.sln\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>Then we only get search results for all files with the text as part of the filename or file extension.<\/p>\n<p><strong>File content search<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If we prefix our search term with <em>content:<\/em> like this<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: plain; title: ; notranslate\" title=\"\">\r\ncontent: SomeContent\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>Then we only get search results from within files (i.e. text search).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kind<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We can use the <em>kind<\/em> option along with file type, such as <em>text<\/em>, <em>music<\/em> etc. See <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/win32\/lwef\/-search-2x-wds-aqsreference#common-file-kinds\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Common File Kinds<\/a>.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: plain; title: ; notranslate\" title=\"\">\r\nkind:text\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>The above list all text files.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other file options<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We can also use the following, other file options, for example finding <\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: plain; title: ; notranslate\" title=\"\">\r\ndatemodified:lastweek\r\nmodified:lastweek\r\nmodified:05\/10\/2022\r\nsize:&gt;500\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>The first two options are the same and list files modified last week.
